Three

I want to update my blog but I just couldn’t. Now I’m forcing myself to write an entry.

A lot has happened for the past three weeks but the top three things that occupied my head were my studies, the FEU Advocate and frustrations that I couldn’t quite face, explain or dare say—at least out loud.

First, my academics were at its usual state—coping. Miraculously, though this really sounds boastful, my grades are still above average. In the conduct of our thesis, I felt isolated in my group. And I blame myself for it and I do not blame them for being indifferent since I rarely attended meetings—or not at all. In any case, it was resolved, by a high grade for the Thesis Defense. So all’s well that ends well.

For the publication, I’ve been ambitious since the start of my term as Managing Editor. So far, I’ve accomplished all that I’ve wanted except for a few glitches this semester. But if there’s one thing I truly regret, that’s the fact that I have to be the ‘kontrabida’ (antagonistic) just to get things done. But hey, I had the best orientation from the former executive board. I’m scared that I’m pushing too hard that they’d break, so if they chance up on this, I really am sorry for being atrocious when it comes to deadlines.

Now for my frustrations, suppressed emotions have been haunting me for the past months. I faced two choices; to allow the feeling or exert every inch of my body to push it away. I chose the latter. I have to. If I could only will them away, I’d do it.

Bad at Being a Laggard

Whenever I read Harry Potter, I never seem to notice how many pages I’ve turned unless I feel the smooth coated paperback against my fingers. But if I read novels other than Rowling, I seem to be counting words rather than reading. The next chapter would always come as a relief, it only means that I’m about to finish the story. And I just told myself, a lot has changed.

Humans have this innate behavior of being apathetic lest change is immediate and strikes at once. If the dynamics have a sudden crucial and threatening repercussion, that’s when people have haste with their actions.

Everything has been gradual for me. That I just let things pass me by—day in, day out. Nostalgia occupied my head earlier, it felt like yesterday that the Advocate was having an election for Editorial Board positions and just earlier, I was taking an exam for Executive Board positions. There were a lot of changes within a matter of two years. The most drastic however, are the people whom I’ve met and worked with.

Two days ago, one of my friends surprised me. I gasped when she broke the news and immediately, I know what she had gone through and will be going through. I’ve seen it before, I saw it again and I will see it once more—enough to last a lifetime.

Yesterday, we went to the printing press for the paper’s proofing. After spending roughly five hours I got home just before midnight. Declaring this day as a day-off, it made me realize that I don’t know how to spend the day without thinking about the paper or doing something involving the FEU Advocate. In proof, I just sent out a message about our schedule for next week. That’s when it hit me. Not just with the Advocate, not just with my academics, but more than that. The feeling is vague and rather indescribable.

I don’t even know how to end this post—but I surely am out of words. Notice how unmapped and rather scattered my thoughts are? That’s what I become when I don’t have anything to do—I’m a very bad laggard. Not that it’s good to be one..

I Broke My Heart

It was the first time that I experienced being in love. It was also the first time that I cried my eyes out. It was the first time that I couldn’t bring myself to smile or jump into conversations. It was the first time.

I broke my own heart. I have never felt this way towards another person. It was only then when that person had to go away when I realized how I really felt. Well at least that’s what I keep telling myself. I knew what my mind was telling me long before that day, but I never accepted such a feeling despite the surge of emotions overwhelming me by the mere bass quality of his voice. I cannot accept that I felt so strong for another person. I denied my ability to love. I loathe myself for falling for such a guy.

Bursting is the most appropriate term to coin my status now. This hurting that should be buried with me to the grave. To love someone such as him is completely delusional and absurd. If I was him and I was to know the truth, I will feel betrayed. And I don’t want that. Aside from the painful blow that I dealt unto myself, it would be fatal to see him disgusted by me. I can stand the stare of other people who discriminate against my kind. I have been dealing with them for nineteen years now. But if he was to do that to me, then it’s better that he never knew me at all.

I have often laughed at a school girl’s fantasy. I have often entertained myself with love quarrels. But now that I felt the reality of it all; the pain, the agony, the suffering and the longing, I can neither laugh nor smile. I can only cry.

That day I wallowed in my flaws. Every fragment of my life spent with him was racing through my head. I saw things in a different light. He was never the type that I would have a crush on. Eventually it became clearer to me; the traits that I was looking for were traits that were originally his. He never failed to awe me. But I never looked past that. He was never someone that I shy away, I can look him in the eyes and converse with ease.

I can mask what I felt. What I feel is offensive, immoral and disgusting—to him. I cannot and must not love someone like him. I cannot even breathe his name to another soul. I’m threatened that what I feel will come to his knowledge. The mere thought sends shivers through my spine. A cold chill.

I do not regret my delayed perception. I can’t blame myself for not knowing what love is for I have never been in love. If I knew love earlier then I would’ve been in pain ever since.

I begrudged my gender, personality, and existence. I hated myself for being the way I am. It was one of the few times that I was unsure of myself. I was powerless. I wanted to be with him, yet it’s too farfetched that I do not dare to daydream. I’d die every time I see him.

At least I know how it feels to love. But if this is the way that love will always be for me, then it's better not to love at all. I cannot break my own heart again. Not again.

Pedicure Ko 'Yan!

Is it still eavesdropping even if you can hear your neighbor having a loud argument from across the street? (stupid question)

It was more than just a heated argument; it was more like an explosive debate. Our neighbor was having a shout-off contest, both of them trying to top the other's voice. Can you blame me for listening? I mean, they’re way louder than our TV. Maybe if I can shut my ears and focus my listening, it will all go away. That is if we plug an earphone to the TV.

There were a few words that I could make out from the seemingly endless series of yells and sort of "battle cries." My friend and I began wondering what the ruckus was about. So we turned the TV and electric fan off, we’re obviously gossip-mongers, and our attention shifted from American Idol to our neighbor’s window. It's as if we were listening on a radio program. The type that goes, "Aray! Bakit mo ‘ko hinampas sa batok ng malakas?"

We can’t make out their whole dialogue; we were only able to determine a number of words - which doesn’t make sense at all. They were, in random order; electric fan, bayaran, p*t*ngina mo, leche ka, ako pa rin, kanina ka pa, masakit

Let’s try making sense with these words by stringing a few lines:

Woman: ARAY! P*t*ngina mo! Masakit!
Man: eh hindi ko nga sinasadya eh! Nakaharang ka kasi d’yan p*ta!
Woman: eh g*go ka pala eh! Kaka-pedicure ko lang n’yan! Kaya mo ba bayaran ‘yan hah?
Man: Leche ka! D’yan ka kasi nakapuwesto sa electric fan eh!
Woman: pinapatuyo ko nga pedicure ko eh tatapakan mo lang! t*ngin* ka rin eh noh!
Man: (slams the electric fan) eh p*tangin* akin naman ‘tong electric fan ah! Kaya mo ba bayaran ‘yan hah!? HINDE!
Woman: p*ta! Ako pa rin ang nagbabayad ng kuryente ng p*nyet*ng electric fan na ‘yan! ‘Wag mo sirain at ginagamit ko pa! F*ck sh*t!
Man: Ul*l ka nagpapedicure ka lang ang yabang mo na! kanina ka pa bwis*t ka!

Evidently, they weren’t rehearsing for some play since the lines are just plain dumb. Nah I made those lines up (you didn’t really think that they were having a debate over some pesky pedicure right?). But the jumbled words are true, these words were the most audible fragments of their shout-off.

If you're thinking why I posted this, imagine yourself in your room and you can hear a vocal war right outside your window. What to do? Blog.

Adieu!

To the Advo EB 07-08
Sa dami ng tao sa mundo, mabubuhay ka ng iilan lang ang nakakakilala sayo at mamamatay ka ng iilan lang ang malulungkot sa pagkawala mo.

At dahil ‘jan,

Nakakatuwang isipin na ginugol ko ang isang taon na katrabaho kayo.

Good luck with your post-grad lives!

Reply ASAP?!

I have friends who send quotes daily, or rather hourly, with the usual dose of jokes and greetings. Whenever the message starts glumly, in an uncommon manner, and blatantly unimportant I tend to just mark them as read and not even bother opening them at all. I’m irritated with such texts. Well I do read a few but only if I feel like replying to them.

I’m not a “cellphone” person. Gems, one of my duty group mates, noticed this when we were having our make-up duty at FEU hospital. She noticed that I just checked if I had received any messages. I read them and then pocketed my phone. I really am lazy in responding to messages. Unless it’s imperative or urgent I’d just shun the text but I never delete any messages except, of course, my inbox is full.

What I can’t figure out, however frequent text messages are, is when you really need them to reply—and they don’t. It’s hard to understand how you need to include “Reply ASAP” when you text them and you need an answer at once. There are of course a few people who are really smart. These people are very few. They are reliable despite the lack of symbols of urgency in your message. What I mean with symbols are capitalized letters, question marks with exclamation points. When I text them they understand what I’m asking. A few of them know me for being lazy in texting which makes them aware that I won’t send a message unless it’s important.

Some people who don’t know me that well but still manage to reply instantly are those who are aware of their to-do-list. They know that they’re the only ones capable of addressing such things that they provide answers in a snap.

It just pains me to think why people tend to have a difficulty in replying to important matters when they have the capability to be “emo” for everyone to know during needless times. I’m not against it because it serves as a gauge of how my friends are doing. I’m not an insensitive jerk who doesn’t know how to ride the social wave. I dig it. I get it when people feel sending quotes and jokes because I’ve been there before. But people need to be informed when they ask something, especially if it’s your responsibility.

Summer is like an open season for group messages since more free time means more GMs. Oh yeah I’m complaining. It’s not that I want to be disconnected, though I’d wish I was occasionally, It’d just be a relief if they could be as persevere when something crucial comes up.

No to Homophobia!

NO TO HOMOPHOBIA!

I am the boy who never finished high school, because I got called a fag everyday.

I am the girl kicked out of her home because I confided in my mother that I am a lesbian.

I am the prostitute working the streets because nobody will hire a transsexual woman.

I am the sister who holds her gay brother tight through the painful, tear-filled nights.

We are the parents who buried our daughter long before her time.

I am the man who died alone in the hospital because they would not let my partner of twenty-seven years into the room.

I am the foster child who wakes up with nightmares of being taken away from the two fathers who are the only loving family I have ever had. I wish they could adopt me.

I am not one of the lucky ones. I killed myself just weeks before graduating high school. It was simply too much to bear.

I am the man who fears that I will never be able to be myself, to be free of this secret because I won’t risk losing my family and friends.

We are the couple who had the realtor hang up on us when she found out we wanted to rent a one-bedroom for two men.

I am the person who never knows which bathroom I should use if I want to avoid getting the management called on me.

I am the mother who is not allowed to even visit the children I bore, nursed, and raised. The court says I am an unfit mother because I now live with another woman.

I am the domestic-violence survivor who found the support system grow suddenly cold and distant when they found out my abusive partner is also a woman.

I am the domestic-violence survivor who has no support system to turn to because I am male.

I am the father who has never hugged his son because I grew up afraid to show affection to other men.

I am the home-economics teacher who always wanted to teach gym until someone told me that only lesbians do that.

I am the woman who died when the EMTs stopped treating me as soon as they realized I was transsexual.

I am the person who feels guilty because I think I could be a much better person if I didn't have to always deal with society hating me.

I am the man who stopped attending church, not because I don’t believe, but because they closed their doors to my kind.

I am the person who has to hide what this world needs most, love.

I am the person ashamed to tell my own friends I'm a lesbian, because they constantly make fun of them.

I am the boy tied to a fence, beaten to a bloody pulp and left to die because two straight men wanted to “teach me a lesson”

—IF YOU BELIEVE THAT HOMOPHOBIA IS WRONG, REPOST THIS ON YOUR BLOG!

Solicited Advice

Listen to your friends, especially when you ask for their opinion. Close friends always have something to say whether solicited or not. Usually, it is second nature to discuss a problem with your best friend or someone trustworthy. Moreover, they redirect you to the right path. But an advice is still yours to sustain or denounce, it’s always up to you to imbibe and apply what they say. This is because they view things on a different perspective, from the outside looking in, which is not ultimately precise. Yet for the same reason, they're vision might be clearer than yours.

Now why is that so?

It’s like playing cards; your view is limited to your deck. You see the players but you don’t know who’s got the Ace. You tend to act according to your hand's best play. Risking your King may be the key to winning, since you don't know what the future holds—you move unfavorably. A friend is someone who sees via a different angle. Since I used playing cards as a metaphor, this friend appears to be an accomplice in cheating the game. Well, as long as the thought gets through.

He or she looks at your situation in a more comprehensive and mostly objective manner, which is the ground for feeling antagonized, unless your friend has an unseen or unannounced stand. They may propose something which doesn't acquiesce with what you think. They might also perceive aggressors you never deemed as such.

What should you do?

Never disregard opinions especially when the intention is for your gain. Yet, never act without re-aligning their perspective with yours. This might be beating around the bush rather than hitting the mark. Take it into account because your friend’s advice deserves credit, however, place your position and infuse your line of sight. This may not be all-the-time fruitful but it usually is.

Where is the problem?

Your dilemma heightens when you neglect sympathetic counsel just because it sounds adverse or even ridiculous to the point of being obnoxious. When an individual ‘seeks’ another’s guidance, it is blatant incapacity to decide. Expectedly, that individual accepts an advice. But if he or she shrugs that off, the possibility of making a mistake is high.

Bear in mind, you have a limited view of the matter. Unless you have multiple perspectives, be accommodating of potentially contradicting standpoints. And if you do have that, it won’t hurt to have an open mind. An outside angle is inevitably different from an inside viewpoint. Also, credibility is causal to a positive result. But the varying stance remains unchanged unless you make a choice. So it is important to listen and act.

A friend may be inexperienced when it comes to love and relationships but his or her meticulous assessment could be beneficial. He or she might not be a Business major but is able to identify a plausible market. All the more, seeking counsel benefits you. Because when you don’t listen, you tend to end up in tears as you sober and soak your friend's shoulder until he or she asks, “Do you need a bucket?.”

Indirectly, friends get hurt when other people berate you for your fault. They get affected because it’s as if they weren’t there for you. They may feel the worst feeling of being powerless as you keep on banking insults.

And what do they do?

They end up defending you. They get hit by tomatoes and coleslaw too. It won’t stop until you accept defeat; you stop denying and try to stand once more. Now, if you fall face-first again—your friends leave you but your true friends will kick your ass and punch you with reality. They may not be as lenient as before but it only means they care. Now if friends have done their part, you should do yours.

Just what is that?

Listen and act.

Transitory Elation

When everything is mechanical and as passive as breathing, it’s always a relief when a different stimulus, something out of the ordinary, springs out to break your monotonous routine. It’s like cross-stitching; with every in and out of the needle, there’s a ready hole waiting. And each hole is calculated to finish into a bigger picture, your pattern.

My life is like that right now. It’s not that I don’t smile or rather unhappy with what’s happening, in fact I laugh everyday and I love what I’m doing—most of it. It’s just that each day is no different than the other. However, when night comes and I want to sleep, but I can’t, that’s when I get to see through a rather sad perspective.

For this reason, an offhand statement, of a certain person has somehow moved me to temporary elation. It was technically a joke. But people have this tendency to misinterpret, maybe intentional, and think that there is something between the lines when they have a dormant or active affinity for the person who verbalized a harmless dialogue. They try to give meaning to something meaningless. A lot would say that this is desperation and complete malice, I say otherwise. Not because I am one of those culprits but for people living amidst monotony, it’s our sweet escape.

I need not drench myself in ice-cold water or drink a tongue-burning coffee just to make contact with reality. That is something I am well-acquainted with. I do admit that I have imaginative tendencies but what happens in my head remains in my head. I’m merely expressing the relief and what an icebreaker that unexpected and completely mind-boggling phenomenon was.

I never imagined someone saying or rather using a series of flattering words directed to me. It’s not a compliment, it’s more of a situational parody stated with elating vocabulary and in a nonchalant manner. The nonchalance amplifies the feeling I get. It’s so casual that maybe it’s within the zone of the unconscious. Of course, the unconscious is the truth because it’s beyond control and censorship. Now this is me—daydreaming.

Well, with the writing of this post I now chose to let that go. An immediate return to systematic day-by-day lifestyle—maybe I’ll hear something as eyebrow-raising and stimulating as before. Not necessarily from the same person, maybe from someone else. Who knows, maybe from him too? Hope exists for the hopeless.

Forgiven?

Alas, I forgive myself for failing to write something about my beloved cousin. Just now, I’ve finished writing things I remember about her short-lived stay. Though it may not be as commendable as my other works (if there is any – hopefully), it’s still enough for me to say that I have redeemed myself. It is sufficient to stand as my statement as one of her witnesses that she was once here and once passed through here.

Disgusted

The idea that I can’t write anything about my cousin, who passed away, is revolting. I thought I had a lot to say but the fact is I don’t. I was rudely awakened that I have already forgotten who she was when we were kids. It’s disgusting that I can write about almost anything under the sun but not my own blood-relative and first cousin. I am opinionated, which is a trait that I persistently brandish and wave around the faces of my friends and yet here I am – at a complete loss. I would normally be someone who blurts out what he thinks and have the audacity to impose myself on others. But this… it’s not proper, moreover, it is disturbing and, did I already say disgusting and revolting? My stomach churns at the idea and the reality that I was only able to write a mere four paragraphs compared to my five-pages-long articles. I am now apologetic and regretful, of all people, I hadn’t interviewed my cousin. I was too busy with other things that I overlooked the important blessings I had.

We know the value of things that we want to have, and once we have it and clasped within our hands – we lose sight of it. Then when it’s gone, that’s the only time that we realize its true value which we failed to appreciate.

I’m sorry but I promise to remember, before the month ends.

Playing, “It’s All Coming Back To Me Now” by Celine Dion. I do hope that this helps.

A Chance for Stupor

In a rather conclusive manner I'd say that ‘procrastination’ is a student’s worst offense and ultimate crime. Sheesh! If wasting time is a real obstruction of justice, and the penalty is death by lethal injection, then I would’ve died a hundred times over. I don't know if it’s directly related to my temporary ‘drama’ of losing sight of things but damn it does take a higher toll.

Well, one of my great sins was committed again yesterday. Forgive me for I have re-sinned. Our case presentation has been pending since last year, before the New Year, and I just finished my part quite unsatisfactorily. Though distasteful, I have no other option but to 'do with what I have' unless I want to spend another gruesome sleepless night.

Redirecting to my initial topic, I had the whole day yesterday to bag the presentation. Instead I was doing, ‘sige mamaya na lang’, ‘eto sure na mamaya na talaga’ (I still have time, I’ll do it later, I promise I’ll do it after this’) Seemingly a TV series with unending sequels, I delayed and ended up with a coffee in my hand while fighting off the Zs. And this eventually led to an open-mouthed, hypersalivating and unconscious student (me) on the way to the hospital for our duty.

At least now I get to sleep for 3 to 4 hours. Now why am I still typing here?!

Navigation and a New Direction

I just came home from Starbucks. At last, I’ve found an outlet for the distress I’m feeling for quite awhile. In my previous entry, my mind was in a topsy-turvy state. Alas, I found someone who’s easy to talk to. My friend gave me that much-needed relief.

I found relief in having a plan.

A plan is an organized, step-by-step stratagem. But coinage of the term contingency or a ‘back-up’ plan shows how plans get derailed. Thus, hatching a Plan B becomes a necessity. It is this undertaking which redirected my cluttered and slightly rebellious behavior—making it momentous for me. It somehow invigorates the detrimental position I found myself in. A paramount factor would be the person who accommodated my whines.

Having a friend like that is like having a GPS in the Philippines. The streets aren’t perfectly mapped out and getting to a location is very tricky. They don’t actually command you to take the road. They let you gradually propose a plausible path. And it’s up to you to formulate a SMART decision; Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time-bound.

Despite the number of friends, or should I say acquaintances, I could talk to; I learned how rare good conversations are. There are only a handful of persons who possess this attribute.

Everyone should know who their ‘go-to’ person is.

A Life I Used to Want

I never thought that I’d end up admitting that the life I’m living now isn’t what I wanted. I think my grasp of the whole thing is slowly slipping, inconclusively but intentional. Trying to hold a number of things together needs a rather elevated, above average ability of balance—which I believe I possess. It’s like having all of Shiva’s hands.

So where’s the problem?

Interest and loss of momentum. I can perfectly recall that sad Saturday morning during my fourth year in high school. Winning is vital for our volleyball team. We needed to win to compete in the Finals. Unfortunately, we fell short as we have done in our previous games.

We lost the first set with a 23-25 score. Not bad, especially when it a ballooned reception ended that set. It was in the second set that I felt the same thing that I’m feeling now. Nailing the etiology for my present façade is still obscure. Yet, I can identify with that game. We were leading with just one point. The score was 15-14 and it’s our service. All was well so far. Strategy was dancing inside our court. But after we lost the tie with a 15-16, we were pinned. Loss of momentum was the solitary cause.

Comparable to my unwell state, I lost the will to push through. It’s like I’m this dimwit who runs around the fire instead of putting it out. To be honest, typing this blog perfectly depicts my current state.

People who don’t exert too much effort are those who’re, usually, content with what they have. Ambitious and career-driven individuals would push themselves to the limit just to get what they want and get out of whatever hell they’re in. It’s not that I’m satisfied or content. I know I need to be someone more.

But why bother?

I’m living a life that I used to want. Now, I’ll have to do my best to want this life again, ..and I don’t see that happening in the near future, but hey I’ve got to try right?
